Our lives present us with daily challenges that can affect not only our physical health, but above all our mental health. Building resilience (mental resistance) is a suitable way of arming ourselves against this. Climate change can also increase our everyday worries and have a negative impact on our mental health. Natural disasters and extreme weather events, for example, can lead to psychological stress such as ‘eco-anxiety’ and ‘solastalgia’. In the context of individual counselling, the Climate Resilience Guide helps to identify the seven resilience protection factors and promote mental resilience. In addition, personalised tips and recommendations for action are developed to help you cope with your own stress and become more resilient to climate-related fears.
The Climate Resilience Guide starts with a questionnaire to assess the extent of the participants' climate concerns. The 'Climate Resilience Index' is then calculated and specific questions are used to identify the seven resilience factors. These factors are acceptance, optimism, self-efficacy, personal responsibility, network orientation, solution and future orientation, and self-care in the context of climate change. The guide is designed to help participants reflect on how climate change affects their mental health and strengthen their resilience to better manage stress and worry.
